Landscape design and build in Doonan.

Doonan sits in the Noosa hinterland, ten minutes from Eumundi and fifteen from Noosa Heads. Rural-residential acreage, tank and bore water, and ground that moves a lot of water when the summer storms come through.

Why Salt for Doonan

Hinterland acreage, on its own terms.

Doonan blocks are large, unsewered and mostly off mains water, and that changes what a landscape has to do. The gardens that work here establish on tank water, hold through a wet summer, and stay maintainable by the people who live on the property rather than needing a crew every week.

The other thing Doonan properties share is water movement. Storm runoff crosses these blocks rather than soaking into them, and on a large lot that turns into scoured beds, saturated turf and silt heading for a neighbour's boundary. We treat drainage as part of the design rather than something to correct later, shaping swales and falls into the layout before a single plant goes in.

About the area
What we build here

What we tend to build in Doonan.

Whole-property work is the norm here rather than a single zone. On acreage the front entry, the driveway approach, the ground between buildings and the boundary runs all read as one landscape, so we masterplan the lot on a single drawing and build from that.

The Doonan Acreage project in our recent work is a fair sample: swales and subsurface drainage shaped first, ten truckloads of sandstone set through native beds, a fire pit circle between the two dwellings, and Corten edging welded on site so the mowing lines run as long unbroken curves.

Planting for the area

Several styles suit Doonan.

Doonan rewards planting that establishes on tank water, copes with a wet summer, and grows into the hinterland rather than sitting apart from it.

  • Modern native Grass trees, banksias, grevilleas, westringia, casuarina and native grasses under heavy mulch. Low input once established, and it reads as though it belongs on the block.
  • Bushland naturalistic Builds on the existing eucalypt canopy with understory natives, sandstone detail and loose, drifted layouts. The lowest-maintenance option on a large lot.
  • Subtropical Palms, gingers, cordylines and large-leaf foliage for sheltered courtyards and pool surrounds, where the humidity and rainfall do most of the work.
Doonan FAQ

What Doonan owners ask us.

How long does a typical Doonan build take? +

It depends on scope. The Doonan Acreage project in our recent work ran twelve weeks on site for a whole-property masterplan: earthworks and drainage, a fire pit, ten truckloads of sandstone, and planting across the full block. A single zone is considerably shorter.

Water runs across our block in a storm. Can that be designed for? +

Yes, and it is the first thing to resolve. We shape swales to carry overland flow to an outlet, run subsurface drainage under the areas that hold water, and set bed levels and edges so runoff has a path that does not go through the garden. On the Doonan Acreage project all of that went in before any planting, with a silt barrier holding the rear boundary while the ground settled.

Do you work around septic and treatment systems? +

Yes. Doonan is unsewered, so tanks, trenches and irrigation fields sit on every block. We locate them at design stage and keep planting, boulders and machine access clear of them, which is far easier to resolve on a drawing than on site.

Will a garden here survive on tank water? +

A native palette will, once established. We plant for the first summer rather than for a permanent irrigation system: heavy mulch, proper soil preparation, and species that need no supplementary water once their roots are down.

Do you service the surrounding hinterland? +

Yes. Eumundi, Verrierdale, Tinbeerwah, Weyba Downs, Cooroy, Tewantin and Noosa are all in regular range, and the same crew covers the hinterland through to the coast.
